For all they're worth ino the darkness we're headed for (David Bottoms)

The first time i read this quote from Slaughter House Five i was prett grossed out, and couldnt figure out why someone would write about this. But then when you read it over a few times you begin to pick up the symbolism of the poem.

So pretty much in this poem the rats are being compared to the humans. and you can clearly see that they are alike.
"to turn our headlights across the wasted filed,
freeze the startled eyes of rats agains mounds of rubbish."
This quote in particular shows that the rats are just like the humans in that the 'headlights' can almost be any fear that we may encounter. Just like the rats we are almost like a deer in headlights when we come across something that is starling and fearful.
"into garbage, hide in old trunk tires,
rusty oil drums, carboard boxes scattered across the mound"
You can almost put a war meaning behind this, because once were in war it seems like we just run and hide wherever we possibly can. We are no different from the rats in that we are just as scared as they are. People seem to run and hide whenever they are faced with a problem.
